Macha
HIV/AIDS Clinic Opens March
15, 2005!
Out of the approximately 158,000 people served by Macha Mission
Hospital, about 12,200 are HIV positive. Of those, about 2,400
have severe enough disease to need to be on antiretroviral
drugs, Macha is now treating over 2,000 people with antiretovirals
and the number will continue to climb if you help. HelpMercy
is working to provide $100,000 to build a facility dedicated
to AIDS treatment at Macha so that medications can bring life
and hope to all the people at Macha who suffer from AIDS.

HIV TREATMENT:
Surpassing Our Goal: Over 2,000
being treated after 2 1/2 years (goal was 165 people in first
year)
Your donation to support HelpMercy International supports
growth of the HIV treatment program. This has a tremendous
impact on patients and their families. Treatment makes it
possible for a families to stay together. In addition to the
suffering of AIDS patients, their children suffer through
the illness and loss of their parents who have HIV/AIDS as
well as transmission of HIV from mother to child. The effects
of HIV on a child's parents often leads to the loss of family
income and ultimately the children become orphans. Staggeringly,
in Zambia, more than 20% of children under age 18 have lost
one or both parents. A gift of $100 will provide HIV medications
to prolong and dramatically improve the life of a child's
parents, allowing them to provide for their children.

HIV PREVENTION:
Accomplishing Our Goal - To
prevent all cases of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.
One of the biggest tragedies in HIV/AIDS is that it can be
passed from a mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth,
and breastfeeding. This can doom a child to a life of persistent
infections and early death, often by as young as age 2. The
drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV exist
and can reduce the risk from about 40 percent to less than
1%. These drugs are now available for all mothers who deliver
at Macha Hospital. The difference this makes for a child and
for the peace of mind of the family cannot be understated.
It is truly the difference between life and death.
