Women's Health:
HelpMercy is committed to helping the maternity department
at Macha improve the safety of childbirth through ultrasound,
HIV treatment, and other medical interventions. The recent
addition of an ultrasound machine, kindly donated by Dr. Dan
O'leary and Michael Foley from the New England Medical Center's
Department of Radiology, has dramatically improved obstetric
diagnostic services at Macha. Not only could a family know
whether they are having a boy or girl, but they can also diagnose
and treat life-threatening complications prior to those complications
developing into a real emergency. This absolutely will save
lives, indeed it already has saved lives. In the few days
I spent at Macha this August, the ultrasound technician told
me that improved diagnostics the ultrasound allowed had saved
a life while we were there. An ultrasound that was no longer
in use at New England medical center has given life and hope
to family after family.
What we still need:
The maternity ward is in desperate need of renovation to improve
the quality of the birthing facilities and the comfort of
women in maternity care. The total cost of these projects is
estimated at about $700 and would be greatly appreciated by
all the women at Macha.
